FEELING LIKE A GIRLBOSS

Good evening beautiful souls,

This week something happened that finally gave me a kick in the backside to begin working towards a future.

I received a text from my dad a couple of days ago telling me about a job I might be interested in. The vacancy was for a print technician in the art department at Newcastle University. You might think I’d have been excited by this opportunity but instead my heart just dropped. Yes, this job was right up my street and a little spark of excitement did briefly flicker, however I knew there was no point in kidding myself – I just didn’t have sufficient enough skills to apply for the position!

It was in my last weeks at university when I first realised I’d missed an opportunity. I was in the print room almost daily finishing off my work for my degree show when it suddenly dawned on me that being a print technician was a job I would actually really enjoy. Why, when thinking about what to do after university, had I never thought about this before?! I’d never given teaching a thought because that really just wasn’t my thing, but this was different; being a print technician was technical teaching and not academic which is what I wanted to avoid.

Dang the realisation that I had been wasting my time at uni suddenly hit me hard. I should have been using the facilities and knowledge from tutors and technicians to really learn all there was to know about printmaking and excel in different methods; but nope, I had decided to not broaden my horizons but stick to the drypoint engraving technique I knew because I was comfortable with it and it yielded good results.

Thus, knowing I didn’t have enough printmaking knowledge for this job vacancy and being reminded of my missed opportunity to have gained it at university, I was really gutted and very annoyed at myself. However it also sparked an excitement for printmaking in me again and made me realise that although I didn’t have the knowledge to apply now, it didn’t mean I couldn’t acquire the knowledge needed and apply for a job like this in the future. It was time to stop moping around and start taking my future into my own hands by working towards something!

So off inspired and excited me went to look up books on printmaking on Amazon. I ended up investing in two; one on various printmaking techniques and another on how to learn to earn from printmaking. The first one I picked up as a general knowledge kinda book, to teach me more about techniques I have already used as well as to learn about ones I  have never tried before and the second because one of my goals this year is to run an art workshop at my dads cafe, and there’s a section on how to run workshops in it.

Now the other thing I have been hung up about since leaving uni is that I can’t print anymore because I don’t own a printing press. However I never even stopped to consider going out of my comfort zone and looking into other types of printmaking which perhaps don’t actually involve a printing press. So can you guess what else I invested in?! Yup I got myself a little Lino set to finally get some printing done again! I never used to like lino much at school and uni, but I ma excited to just let loose and do some experimenting now!

I’m excited that my love for printing and art has finally been rekindled and that I have found a something that gives me the motivation to strive for something I want!

So here’s to getting my fingers dirty again and finding my art feet again!

I hope you have all had a wonderful week lovelies!

P.S. Would any of you be interested in more arty style posts? DIY’s and craft ideas…?!

BEST OF 2017

Hey there beautiful souls,

I have seen a lot of these posts circulating and really wanted to write my own. This Christmas I wrote a letter to my friends and whilst updating them on what’s been going on in my life within the last year I realise how many wonderful events actually happened in 2017. I often allow the few bad spots to overshadow the good, but reminiscing has filled me with a happiness and positivity I now want carry into this new year. So anyway here are a few of my favourite events summed up through some photographs:

NEW YEAR – NEW BLOG

Good evening beautiful souls,

First of all I want to wish you all a very Happy New Year!!! I hope 2018 will be filled with much excitement, laughter and the reaching of your goals!

The beginning of a new year always fills me with so much inspiration and motivation and so I thought this would be the perfect time to make some changes and update my blog. I have spent the past few days working on alterations and planning ahead. I felt it appropriate for my first blog post of the new year to be an introduction to my new blog and the changes I have made.

Here’s what’s new:

  • I decided to invest in my own domain name http://www.simplycarinaxo.com
  • I spruced up my blog with a new design and layout
  • I have added a SHOP page, which features some of my current favourites and staple goods from household items or entertainment to beauty and health
  • I will be trying my very best to post more regularly, 3 times a week – Wednesday, Friday and Sunday evenings

I am looking forward to continuing my blog and making improvements. I hope you like the changes and as always I’d be glad for any feedback.

LIFE UPDATE – SUMMER COLD

Hello friends,

Sorry I didn’t post anything this weekend, my laptop fan broke and it was off being fixed. I haven’t done a kind of chat style post yet, so as I have been a bit unorganised and don’t have any content to post yet, I thought I would just update you on how I am felling today – which is crap haha!

In general I am really enjoying life at the moment apart from right now I have this annoying cold taking hold of me, turning the nasal tap on as well as blocking it at the same time and draining me of all my energy. I think it was just waiting to happen after August having been such a nonstop busy month and me not giving my body enough time to recuperate maybe.

So yesterday morning I started to feel a bit under the weather and could have done with an early night, however my housemates had planned a dinner and film evening. Anthony and Roop had cooked dinner and invited some friends over too so when I got home from work at around 8pm there was 7 of us sitting down to a yummy Indian/Lebanese dinner which was then followed by a lovely evening chatting and playing games instead of watching a movie. It ended up being 1am before we said goodnight to each other which was far too late for me because as the evening progressed and my nose got stuffier I knew I was definitely in for a full blown cold. I really should have gone to bed at 11 at the latest as I knew my body needed rest but I was having so much fun in really good company that I decided to not pay attention to my body.

Well only getting 5-6hs sleep definitely didn’t help because today I feel terrible. Nevertheless I have had a lovely day off so far. Jessica, Roop, Anthony and  myself continued last nights socialising by having brunch together and playing more games, Code Names and The Settlers of Catan being the favourites. Then all of a sudden it was already 3.30pm and we all got up to get some work done and have a bite of lunch. I cleaned the house a bit, put a wash on and now I am writing this blog post. It’s not exactly been a productive day, but a much needed chilled one which has been perfect with me not feeling well. Sadly I am missing yoga tonight however, I just don’t feel up for it and want an early night to rest my body and catch up on sleep.

The one thing that has really pissed me off today though is the timing of my cold! Tomorrow my choir is backing four-time Brit Classical Award winner Russell Watson at the Gala Theatre in Durham and with this cold I won’t be able to participate – argh! I mean there is no way as I can hardly blow my nose on stage every five minutes! I am so annoyed to be missing this opportunity! I am popping the cold and flu pills and have been drinking so much tea to stay hydrated and help flush out the cold I am running to the toilet every two minutes aha; but sadly I don’t think that will improve my cold enough for me to be able to participate tomorrow evening – I’m absolutely gutted!

Anyway, I’m off to make myself a bowl of soup now and if I haven’t fallen asleep yet before Jessica get’s back from yoga I might just watch an episode of Game of Thrones with her. She’s never seen them before so I’m re-watching them all with her which is good fun.

Well have a nice evening beautiful souls!
