FEELING LIKE A GIRLBOSS

Good evening beautiful souls,

This week something happened that finally gave me a kick in the backside to begin working towards a future.

I received a text from my dad a couple of days ago telling me about a job I might be interested in. The vacancy was for a print technician in the art department at Newcastle University. You might think I’d have been excited by this opportunity but instead my heart just dropped. Yes, this job was right up my street and a little spark of excitement did briefly flicker, however I knew there was no point in kidding myself – I just didn’t have sufficient enough skills to apply for the position!

It was in my last weeks at university when I first realised I’d missed an opportunity. I was in the print room almost daily finishing off my work for my degree show when it suddenly dawned on me that being a print technician was a job I would actually really enjoy. Why, when thinking about what to do after university, had I never thought about this before?! I’d never given teaching a thought because that really just wasn’t my thing, but this was different; being a print technician was technical teaching and not academic which is what I wanted to avoid.

Dang the realisation that I had been wasting my time at uni suddenly hit me hard. I should have been using the facilities and knowledge from tutors and technicians to really learn all there was to know about printmaking and excel in different methods; but nope, I had decided to not broaden my horizons but stick to the drypoint engraving technique I knew because I was comfortable with it and it yielded good results.

Thus, knowing I didn’t have enough printmaking knowledge for this job vacancy and being reminded of my missed opportunity to have gained it at university, I was really gutted and very annoyed at myself. However it also sparked an excitement for printmaking in me again and made me realise that although I didn’t have the knowledge to apply now, it didn’t mean I couldn’t acquire the knowledge needed and apply for a job like this in the future. It was time to stop moping around and start taking my future into my own hands by working towards something!

So off inspired and excited me went to look up books on printmaking on Amazon. I ended up investing in two; one on various printmaking techniques and another on how to learn to earn from printmaking. The first one I picked up as a general knowledge kinda book, to teach me more about techniques I have already used as well as to learn about ones I  have never tried before and the second because one of my goals this year is to run an art workshop at my dads cafe, and there’s a section on how to run workshops in it.

Now the other thing I have been hung up about since leaving uni is that I can’t print anymore because I don’t own a printing press. However I never even stopped to consider going out of my comfort zone and looking into other types of printmaking which perhaps don’t actually involve a printing press. So can you guess what else I invested in?! Yup I got myself a little Lino set to finally get some printing done again! I never used to like lino much at school and uni, but I ma excited to just let loose and do some experimenting now!

I’m excited that my love for printing and art has finally been rekindled and that I have found a something that gives me the motivation to strive for something I want!

So here’s to getting my fingers dirty again and finding my art feet again!

I hope you have all had a wonderful week lovelies!

P.S. Would any of you be interested in more arty style posts? DIY’s and craft ideas…?!

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS!

Good evening beautiful souls,

It’s that time of year where inspiration is found around every corner and motivation fills my pores driving me to succeed. I don’t know if you enjoy making resolutions, but I personally love this time of year. Although every day can be seen as a new start, there is just something about the new year specifically that fills me with hope, a belief that this will be the year I succeed, that this will be the year I work towards my dreams.

2017 was good to me, although it had it’s bad moments and threw many learning curves my way, when I look back on last year there is so much for me to be grateful for and with this positive mindset I am excited for the year ahead and have made some resolutions I hope to fulfil; here goes:

  • Turning Vegan – I have reduced my meat and dairy intake in the last year and have felt soo much better for it. I have toyed with the idea of turning vegan for quite some time now, but always put it off making excuses thinking I’d miss certain foods such as eggs (eggs are definitely going to be the hardest part of turning vegan for me) however every time I watch a vegan documentary and am reminded of all it’s benefits and positive impact on our health, the environment and of course animal welfare it fills me with a deep longing to be a part of this movement and thus I decided that this year is my year to make the transition.
  • My Health & Weightloss – Last year I lost 2 stone and then slowly and annoyingly put 1 stone back on again. I always begin the new year on a high and then bit by bit get comfortable again eventually falling back into old habits. I am hoping that eating a Vegan diet will help me loose some more weight, but I know that the main culprit for me is sugar which I can still eat on a vegan diet of course! What I need to work on this year is curbing my sugar addiction. Now I know diet isn’t everything and thus upping my exercise is another thing I need to work on. Getting into a regular gym routine is back on the menu as well as making myself walk to work again rather than just hoping on the bus – this will also save me some pennies. So all in all, my resolution is to loose 2 more stone this year and keep them off.
  • Work On My Mental Health – I want to take more time for myself this year to work on myself. I know from previous experience that meditation works well to start my day on the right side of the bed and give me a more peaceful nights rest, so one goal is to start meditating in the mornings and evenings again. Another thing I want to work on is my anxiety, I want to learn to not let it hinder me from fulfilling my dreams.
  • Re-learn To Play The Cello – For Christmas I got the best surprise present ever, a cello on loan. I haven’t played the cello in over 6 years and so I want to make the most of this opportunity and re-learn how to play the cello maybe even take some lessons and really enjoy being able to make music again
  • Minimalise – Another big goal for this year is to become less attached to my possessions and slowly de-clutter and minimalise my belongings.
  • Start Saving – For the past few years I have had a deep urge to travel the world, but never managed to scrape quite enough together for a lengthy trip, so my last goal for this year is to begin a travelling fund!
  • Make More Time For Friends – Sadly so many of my best friends do not live close by, they are scattered across the UK from London to Edinburgh or even further afield like Germany and France. This means I rarely see them and I miss them greatly so I want to make a conscious effort this year to call more and hopefully actually visit them too.

Well there you have my main resolutions for 2018! I’m excited to start working on all of them and shall update you throughout the year as to how I am getting on! Did any of you make any resolutions for 2018 – I would love to know what goals you are working towards?!

NEW YEAR – NEW BLOG

Good evening beautiful souls,

First of all I want to wish you all a very Happy New Year!!! I hope 2018 will be filled with much excitement, laughter and the reaching of your goals!

The beginning of a new year always fills me with so much inspiration and motivation and so I thought this would be the perfect time to make some changes and update my blog. I have spent the past few days working on alterations and planning ahead. I felt it appropriate for my first blog post of the new year to be an introduction to my new blog and the changes I have made.

Here’s what’s new:

  • I decided to invest in my own domain name http://www.simplycarinaxo.com
  • I spruced up my blog with a new design and layout
  • I have added a SHOP page, which features some of my current favourites and staple goods from household items or entertainment to beauty and health
  • I will be trying my very best to post more regularly, 3 times a week – Wednesday, Friday and Sunday evenings

I am looking forward to continuing my blog and making improvements. I hope you like the changes and as always I’d be glad for any feedback.

FAVOURITE GYM TUNES

Hey guys,

I don’t know about you, but I hate working out to the music blaring in gyms and always get annoyed when it’s so loud that I can still here it with my headphone on aha! To me music is very motivational and inspirational so I dread the days where I forget my headphones! I work so much harder with my own choice of music blasting into my ears! So I thought I would share my four favourite gym albums with you (I’m not one for creating playlists aha); maybe some of the tunes will inspire and motivate you too!

Southpaw soundtrack: I love this movie and the music has good powerful beats to run, pedal or lift weights to. My two favourite songs are probably Rob Bailey and The Hustle Standard – Beast and Eminem – Phenomenal because their lyrics in particular are very motivational when you feel like giving up or the exercise is too difficult just listen and feel the words: “Breath – I’m a motherfucking Beast!” and “I’m phenomenal”.

Sia – This is Acting: Another album full of good tunes. Again I find Sia’s music very powerful and thus good to workout to.

Step Up Soundtrack: I love all the step up soundtracks but I recently bought the soundtrack to the first step up having wanted it for years and I’m loving it! The music just makes me want to move, to dance, it’s great for housework too aha. Take this morning for example, I was feeling tired and unmotivated to do the dishes and some cleaning before work, then I put the Step Up soundtrack on whilst writing this blog post and suddenly my shoulders started to move to the beat and I started feeling happier and was game for taking on the dishes aha!

And last but not least,

50 Shades of Grey Soundtrack: I haven’t used this soundtrack in a while but when the movie first came out like 3 years ago I was all over this soundtrack for the gym and I do still enjoy using it now too when I remember. I guess what I like about soundtracks is it’s already a playlist without me having to make my own!

There ya go guys, let me know if you like any of these soundtracks or particular songs and please do share your own gym tunes with me I love finding new workout music!
