DAY TRIPPING – DESTINATION ALNMOUTH

Good evening beautiful souls,

Last week I was luck enough to have 3 days off, which for me is very rare and thus meant that I actually had time to do something nice for myself once all the housework and various other tasks were completed. The weather was so nice and I was craving a beach trip, but not being able to drive made this wish a bit problematic. Sadly there aren’t many easily accessible by public transport beaches around, well not unless you want to sit on a bus for over an hour which for me is a big no no as I get serious travel anxiety when it comes to bus journeys that are longer then 20mins! After some research however I discovered that Alnmouth station was pretty easy to get to only being a 30min walk away from the beach and so I had my day trip destination.

The walk to the beach is quite a pleasant and easy to follow as it’s just along the main road. From the station you firstly walk through a small housing estate and then it’s out in nature with wild fields on your left and glimpses of the sea on your right. After about 20 minutes you reach central Almnouth and walk through it’s floral hanging basket lined street until you reach the golf course and the beach.

On my way down to the beach I came across these beautiful roses and I had to stop and give them a sniff – does anyone else do this whenever they see roses?! They smelt divine and I’m not going to lie, I was very tempted to snap one off and take it with me!

The beach was relatively busy, the sun was out and there was a light breeze rippling through my hair as picked a little empty spot to put down my picnic blanket. Once settled I sat back with my feet in the sand just enjoying being in the present moment and watching the world around me; the grandparents sitting in their folding chair reading their papers, children hopping from stone to stone and family’s running around playing Frisbee and flying kites. It was a beautiful afternoon.

It wasn’t long until I unpacked my picnic full of healthy vegan goodies and read a bit of my book whilst savouring my lunch. I had grapes, blueberries, pretzels, veg, hummus and crackers as well as a little can of G&T. It was the perfect picnic! Afterwards I lay down with my headphones on listening to my audiobook (The Count of Monte Cristo) and relishing the feeling of the sun warming my skin.

Sadly the clouds came in not long after and they didn’t seem to want to budge meaning I got chilly quite quickly and ended up deciding to pack up and head on home again, but not before I took a stroll along the beach and dipped my toes in the chilly sea of course. Although I was only there for about 2 hours, it really was worth it and I enjoyed every minute of my mini excursion!

I hope you’ve all found the time recently to go out and do something nice for yourselves too! I know I need to make time for myself like this more often. I don’t do it enough and it did me the world of good!

GARDEN PROJECT BEGINNINGS

Good evening beautiful souls,

I’ve had a busy day at work today and when I got home I decided to make the most of the last rays of sun and do some gardening. I can’t wait to have the garden looking all nice, but it’s going to be a long process till it’s where I want to be. I just bought some vegetable seeds and am excited to get planting however I need to prepare the soil first in our first vegetable patch and then build another raised vegetable patch too.

Anyway, there’s not much to be seen yet I guess, the changes are subtle, but I wanted to share the progress on mine and Jessica’s garden project so far. Here’s the before and afters:

Apart from the addition of a tomato and pepper plant there’s not much of a difference here yet. But the plan is to paint this shelf green and the remove every second shelf to make more room for tall plants. Next I also want to plant flowers or maybe more herbs in the little baskets next to the stairs; I’m not sure yet. It’s a bit broken and was left in the garden from the previous owner of this house, but with a bit of sprucing up I think it’ll look great.

In our bin area we just swept the ground and cleared it of all the small rubbish that was left from the house renovation before we moved in. However there are, as you can see, still some old blind rails and the like which need to go to the tip and as neither Jessica or I can drive we’re going to have to wait till someone can get rid of them for us. The plan for this are is to rid it of everything bar the bins and then add a little greenhouse in the right hand corner.

Again this area doesn’t look nice yet, or as if much has been done, but de-weeded the soil and I loosened it before adding the slab stones at the back instead of the array of uneven stones. This will be our salad patch probably.

Lastly, I moved the bird table onto the pebbled area and put the tree pot in another place too. The plan for this area is to build another raised vegetable patch where our little potted rhubarb plant is now standing.

So as you can see, we’ve only started with little improvements so far, but I am so excited for when it will all be finished because I think it will look really nice. Hopefully we can paint the fences again and power wash the pavement to really give the finished look a nice fresh clean touch.

Well, I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into our garden plans. I shall be keeping you updated!

Has anyone else got any big garden projects planned this year?! I’d love to know!

MY TOP 3 CRUELTY FREE/VEGAN BATH & SHOWER PRODUCTS

Hello friends,

My cruelty free / vegan skin care routine went down really well, so I thought I would also share what bath / shower products I use. My favourite brands are Faith in Nature, Funky Soap and Balance Me.

Faith in Nature have a wide range of products from cleaning liquids to shower gels. They are all vegan friendly. I love their Shower Gel & Foam Bath products and use them mainly for foam baths rather than as shower gels as they produce great bubbles for a relaxing bath and smell lovely and fresh too. I definitely recommend giving them a go, they aren’t too expensive either. To shop click this link Faith In Nature alternative have a look on amazon where you can sometimes find cheaper deals.

I started using Funky Soap about 2 years ago when I wanted to strip back my hair from all the chemicals and let it’s natural oils take over again. Funky Soap are vegan and cruelty free and specialise in natural shampoo bars. Now admittedly they did not take well to my long hair at the time and washing the soap out seemed almost impossible, but I guess that depends on you hair type. When I shaved all my hair off for charity I went a good to months without washing my hair with any products bar warm water and then when it got a little longer I started introducing the Funky Soap shampoo bars which on the short hair worked really well and I am still using them to this day. It’s a small independent British based company and it’s nice to also support smaller companies rather than big chains. They are well worth a look as they’re products are more natural and cheaper the for example Lush. To shop click this link Funky Soap. They also produce shaving bars and liquid shampoos amongst other things, well worth having a browse.

Balance Me has to be brought up again (admittedly this is another tester product and one I haven’t actually bought as they are quite pricey) however, I just love the smell of Balance Me products. They are so earthy and cosy and make you feel more connected to nature. Although not all vegan Balance Me is a cruelty free brand and uses mostly natural ingredients. Hope you found this helpful! Please let me know if you have tried any of these brands before and if you like them too!

MY GARDEN BEFORE & AFTER

Hello friends,

The other week my parents came over for dinner and brought me a little present. I’d been saying for ages that I needed to de-weed the garden and so they showed up with a little trowel and my own cute gardening gloves! The back garden almost looked like a little wilderness and I couldn’t wait to tidy it up! So on a sunny day off I got my fingers dirty and took out all the weeds!

After a good two hours of gardening, here are the after photos; from a weed infested garden, to a tidier, cleaner looking back yard! Although surprisingly tiring work I enjoyed myself and can now enjoy soaking up the sun again on nice sunny days!

All that is left to do now is the front garden!
